Situation: Battle-weary Corsairs and pilots of VMF-214's "Black Sheep" cool down as its leader Major Gregory "Pappy" Boyington describes a successful mission. The personnel depicted in this painting are Intelligence Officer Frank Walton, Flight Surgeon James Reames, and pilots Chris Magee, John Bolt, Bruce Matheson and Ed Olander at their base on Vella Lavella, late in 1943.
