A PBY-5A Catalina, the reliable naval patrol aircraft throughout WWII is seen here off the Northeast Coast of the island of Kauai, the northern most in the Hawaiian island chain in 1944. "Dumbo" refers to the popular Walt Disney cartoon character of the era, the elephant with huge ears that could fly.
