  • On April 18, 1942, sixteen B-25 bomber crews of the U.S. Army Air Corps accomplished the first World War II air raid on Japan. Led by legendary airman Lt. Col. James H. Doolittle, the raiders took off from the U.S. Navy's carrier Hornet. The entire endeavor - daring concept, planning, training and performance - was a joint exercise between Navy and Air Corps, done in complete secrecy.
