The F-100 Super Sabre was the world's first production plane that can fly faster than the speed of sound in level flight. The F-100D, in particular, was designed to address the shortcomings of its predecessors. This D variant was primarily designed as a ground attack plane with secondary fighter capability. Aside from the autopilot, improved avionics, and Sidewinder capabilities, the Super Sabre is also outfitted with an X-band radar transmitter and Astrodyne booster rocket. On December 26, 1956, two F-100Ds were recognized as the first ever aircraft to perform buddy refueling successfully. The F-100D took its maiden flight on January 24, 1959 and entered service on September 29, 1956
