This historic painting was commissioned by LCOL H. A. Wilkes, USAF (Ret.) to honor and illustrate in accurate detail the activities of a Fifteenth Air Force bomb group. The scene depicted takes place in February 1944 at the beginning of Operation POINT BLANK. Captured on canvas are the dramatic and complex actions that occurred during the recovery phase of a bombing mission targeting the enemy's aircraft factories in Regensburg, Germany. The composition recognizes alike the important contributions of support personnel and aircrewmen. The environment and conditions shown are that of a captured Axis airfield newly given to the USAAF's 449th Bomb Group; the facilities are still war-ravaged and lack adequately prepared runways, utilities, housing, and undamaged support buildings.
