The 1933 Thompson Trophy Air Races moved back from Cleveland to Los Angeles’ Mines Field, home of the 1928 races. Flamboyant pilot Roscoe Turner (standing by his plane), won 1st place that year. In the foreground is a radical Gee Bee R-1 Racer, which won 3rd place. A difficult plane to fly, the Gee Bee was infamous for killing its pilots. The previous year legendary pilot Jimmy Doolittle won 1st place in a Gee Bee ...and survived to later become a General in WWII, achieving fame for his daring “Doolittle Raid” on Tokyo early in the war.
