On 4 August 1942, Lieutenants Stan Long and Ken Ambrose of the 54th Fighter Squadron intercepted and shot down two Japanese Kawanishi flying boats over the island of Atka, scoring the first P-38 victories of World War II. The Lightnings were escorted by a B-17 bomber that provided navigation for the long patrol down the Aleutians. The twin engines of the P-38 were essential for the missions being flown over long distances and in poor weather.
