Tin Cans Save the Day by John Hume

This painting depicts the USS Bailey in action on 27 March 1943 during the Battle of the Komandorski Islands, which are Soviet territory located to west of the Aleutian Islands. During the battle the Bailey and three other destroyers distinguished themselves by protecting a heavily damaged cruiser with a smoke screen and torpedo attack which convinced the superior Japanese force to retire. The Bailey took several direct hits from two Japanese heavy cruisers while getting into position to launch her torpedoes. For this action, she was awarded the Navy Unit Commendation.
