The USS Langley (CV-1/AV-3) was the United States Navy's first aircraft carrier, converted in 1920 from the collier USS Jupiter (AC-3), and also the U.S. Navy's first electrically propelled ship. At 12,900 tons and 542 feet, it stands in stark contrast to the USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71), the fourth Nimitz-class aircraft carrier. At 104,600 tons and 1,092 feet, the Roosevelt along with its 90 fixed wing aircraft and helicopters and its almost 6,000 ship's crew and air wing, present a formidable projection of military power to the far reaches of the world.
