In October of 1978, P-3C, callsign Alfa Foxtrot 586 was on a routine mission on the far northwest side of the Bering Sea. During re-start of the number 1 engine, the aircraft experienced an engine overspeed with a subsequent fire. The fire was extinguished, but it was apparent it would re-ignite, and the crew should prepare to ditch in the icy water below. Still 200 miles from the nearest runway and no friendly rescue forces in the area, the aircraft set down in 30 foot waves almost exactly midway between the United States and the Soviet Union.
