  • The Stratojet was designed and constructed during the early "Cold War" and was America's first jet bomber. The airplane was considered radical at the time due to its swept wings and six pod-mounted jet engines. And this girl could really go, outrunning the fighter jets of the day. The configuration of today's modern airliners is a direct decendant of the B-47. Eventually more than 2000 of these sleek airplanes were ordered making them the workhorse of the Strategic Air Command. Capable of delivering a multi-megaton nuclear weapon, the Stratojet was the muscle in the "Big Stick" that was the American bomber force throughout the early "Cold War". The B-47 Stratojet is truly an unsung hero of her day.
