Lockheed’s legendary F-117 Nighthawk…Developed during an ultra-secret “black project”, the F-117’s maiden flight took place in 1981 at Groom Lake, Nevada, and became operational in 1983, but was shrouded in secrecy until it was revealed to the public in 1988. The F-117 was widely publicized for its role in the Gulf War of 1991. Though commonly referred to as the “Stealth Fighter", it was strictly an attack aircraft. This revolutionary aircraft carried out significant missions during its 25 years in operation, including Panama, the Gulf, Afghanistan and Iraq. Among its notable missions were Operations Just Cause, Desert Storm, Joint Guard and Enduring Freedom. In 2008, The US Air Force retired the F-117 , primarily due to the advent of the F-22 Raptor. Despite the Nighthawk’s official retirement, part of the fleet has been kept airworthy, and have been observed flying since 2009. Its unconventional appearance and technological advancements at its introduction added to the list of stunning achievements in Lockheed’s long record of state-of-the-art combat aircraft.
